To all District 12 FBLA Members and Advisors,
Sometimes we get comfortable. And don’t get me wrong, comfort is a good thing but too much comfort limits our ability to grow. Up until four years ago, I was perfectly comfortable. I was a shy middle schooler who could always be found with my nose in a book. All of a sudden, my small bubble of comfort shattered with one flyer. Across the flyer, there was ‘FBLA’ sprawled in big bold letters. I had never heard of FBLA before as it was a brand-new club at my school. In particular, there were three phrases on that flyer that frightened me- public speaking, leadership, and competition. All three were things I never felt confident in and things I never saw myself willingly doing. Despite every bone in my body screaming at me to ignore the flyer and stay in my comfort zone, I gave way to a small, quiet voice telling me to just take a chance. And I’m eternally glad that I listened to that voice and took a chance. I stood outside my comfort zone and challenged myself with something I thought would be impossible for me to do. Yes, that’s right, I Alyssa Abraham, joined FBLA.
Now, four years later, I competed at all three levels of competition, got connected with internships, discovered a passion for business, and developed greater confidence in myself. If you asked me four years ago if I have ever thought I could be district president, I would have laughed in your face. But something changed, I changed. I changed because I stepped outside my comfort zone four years ago and joined FBLA. If you are thinking about joining or are on the fence about joining- do it. FBLA is a great organization to challenge you and push you outside your comfort zone so you can reach your full potential. Behind those four letters, there is an exciting world of business waiting to be discovered full of networking, public speaking, leadership, community service, and more. FBLA members and advisors wok hard to give as many opportunities as we can to get our members out of their comfort zone and grow into stronger students and individuals. This year is no different. This is the year we step outside of our comfort zones and shape our own stories. So, this is your sign to stop being comfortable. If you’re not living life on the edge, you’re taking up too much space.
